In light of the exponential growth of complex 21st-century threats related to global terrorist networks and transnational criminal organizations and the growing range of criminal perpetrators, including violent political extremists, terrorists, warlords, globally networked insurgents and criminal groups transnational organizations, it was deemed essential to raise awareness among United Nations officials and insiders of the functions performed by the United Nations on Counter-Terrorism (CT) and the Prevention and Countering of Violent Extremism (P/CVE) through the production of an online training certified by UNOCT.

The course provides a snapshot of the structures governing the UN CT and P/CVE entities, equipping learners with the tools to identify the roles and responsibilities of key entities in the UN counter-terrorism system and recognize relevant Security Council resolutions and of the General Assembly. In addition, the training will delve into the work of UN counter-terrorism entities by introducing students to key subject areas of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, identify conditions conducive to violent extremism, and provide an overview of some of the tools and resources available to support the implementation of the United Nations Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism.
